Texas Pro Bono Lawyers

Texas Pro Bono Lawyers

Many people chose not to hire a lawyer because they think that lawyers are expensive. They may come to this conclusion if they feel that the cost of winning or losing a case will be lower than hiring a lawyer. While it is true that some lawyers charge a hefty amount for their services, there are a significant number of lawyers out there that will agree to represent you without collecting a fee. Such lawyers are called Pro Bono lawyers.

You should not confuse them with lawyers that work for a legal aid organization because those lawyers are paid by their work funders. They are also not similar to court appointed lawyers because those lawyers are paid by the courts. Pro Bono lawyers are not paid for their time by the client, legal aid organization or even the courts. This is why they are sometimes referred to as Volunteer Lawyers.

What Pro Bono Lawyers Do?

Pro Bono lawyers help a number of people involved in criminal and civil cases. Fr example, they offer their services to couples that are going through a divorce or a contested child custody case. People that need to review contracts and sign them can also get help from Pro Bono lawyers. There is high demand for legal services especially from people in low and moderate income lawyers. Pro Bono lawyers help this situation by representing people that are denied access to justice because they cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

Why Lawyers Take Pro Bono Cases

Some personally make the decision to offer their services for free. There are also law firms that give their lawyers time off to perform a certain amount of Pro Bono work. Generally, all lawyers have a responsibility to provide legal services for people that cannot afford to pay for legal services. In fact, the American Bar Association expects lawyers to do at least 50 hours of Pro Bono legal services every year.

  • Family Law

Either the law firm or the lawyer gets to decide the kind of case they will take on for the Pro Bono assignment. Sometimes the lawyer or the firm approach organizations that promote social causes to offer free services. These include organizations that deal with ecological issues, child homelessness or domestic abuse. Taking on Pro Bono cases also allows lawyers to practice in an area of law that is different from what they normally practice. Take for instance, a personal injury lawyer or family lawyer taking an immigration case and so on.

How To Find Pro Bono Lawyers

You can find a Pro Bono lawyer by contacting programs that provide such lawyers in areas where you are located.  If you are not sure what programs you need to contact, you can research online to find programs where lawyers represent people in your situation. You can also apply for free help at legal clinics found all over Texas. However, due to there being a huge demand for free legal services, there is no guarantee that you can get a Pro Bono lawyer by going to a legal clinic.
