Busting Diet and Nutrition Myths

Texas Health Insurance – Knowing the facts about the foods we eat can help us properly fuel our bodies and keep our weights where we’d like them.

Myth 1: To lose weight, eat a very low-calorie diet.
Facts: If you eat little, you’ll likely get hungry and overeat later, or your body will slow metabolism to save fuel. You’ll see some weight loss, but you’ll lose mostly muscle and water. The weight can come back as fat. Texas Health Insurance Quotes

A better idea: Eat small healthy meals or snacks every three or four hours. Choose from meat, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts, grains, fruits, vegetables, and dairy to get protein, carbohydrates, and a little good fat (see Myth 5).Texas Health Insurance

Myth 2: Avoid carbohydrates to lose weight.
Facts: It’s good to avoid carbohydrates from white flour and sugar. Your diet should include carbs from fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole grains. Texas Health Insurance Quotes

Myth 3: Extra protein is good for energy and muscle building.
Facts: Your body uses protein as a last-resort fuel. Carbohydrates are muscle builders. Most extra protein is stored as body fat.

Myth 4: Eggs raise your cholesterol.
Facts: Egg yolks have a lot of cholesterol, but studies say eating an egg a day will not raise cholesterol levels. Eggs are a great source of nutrients but skip cheese, bacon, and sausage with your eggs! Texas Health Insurance

Myth 5: Fat is bad.
Facts: Our bodies actually need some good fats like those in avocados, raw nuts and seeds, natural peanut butter, ground flax seed, and fish like salmon and sardines (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are good!). Skip saturated, hydrogenated, and trans fats.  Texas Health Insurance Quotes
