~Please visit Texas Health, Life, Home and Auto for the Most Affordable Texas Heath Insurance & Texas Auto, Home and Commercial Insurance~ We have exciting news to share with you!  The Weather Channel and Travelers announced last week that they are partnering to launch “My Friends’ Weather,” the first Facebook Open Graph application on weather.com.  The tool will allow users to see which of their friends and family may be affected by breaking weather news.   Through Breaking Now weather alerts on weather.com, users can find out when major events happen – such as threatening tropical storms, disastrous tornado touchdowns and other news – and then be the first to share that information seamlessly via Facebook, directly to the people who may be impacted.   At the same time, through the partnership with Travelers, visitors to weather.com will see useful tips created by Travelers’ Risk Control Property Specialists that can help individuals and businesses prepare for impending storms and prevent property damage. After the storms pass, Travelers will also deliver information that can help individuals and businesses that have been impacted by severe weather – helping them to understand the steps to mitigate damage and begin the recovery process. The first phase of “My Friends’ Weather” invites users to connect their Facebook accounts with weather.com via Open Graph. Then, they will be able to see friends affected by Breaking Now alerts, which display as a red bar across the top of weather.com when activated, and to share the Breaking Now alert directly with their individual friends along with a comment.    Future phases of “My Friends’ Weather” will expand this functionality to local weather pages, where users will be able to see friends who live in an area and share the day’s weather or local weather alerts to them.  Users will also be able to follow weather for their friends in any city and initiate conversations around the weather.   Through another partnership with The American Red Cross, the Weather Channel will incorporate additional topical content, relevant tips, and a platform for disaster-related money donations. A Father’s Love- One Of The Greatest Influences On Personality Development

Monday, July 30th, 2012
~Please visit Texas Health & Life for the Most Affordable Texas Heath Insurance ~ Texas Home Auto Insurance  & Texas Medicare Supplement~ A father's love contributes can contribute as much or more  to a child's development as does a mother's love. A new large-scale analysis of research is proving that the power of parental acceptance and rejection in shaping our personalities as children and into adulthood. Children and adults everywhere, regardless of differences in race, culture, and gender, respond in exactly the same way when they perceived themselves to be rejected by their caregivers and other parental role models.  36 studies from around the world  together  have involved more than 10,000 participants,  found that in response to rejection by their parents, children tend to feel more insecure and anxious, as well as more aggressive and hostile toward others. The pain of rejection, especially when it occurs  in childhood, may linger into adulthood, making it more difficult for the adults who were rejected as children to form trusting and secure  relationships with their peers and intimate partners. The past decade of research in psychology and neuroscience is revealing that the same parts of the brain are activated when people feel rejected as are activated when experiencing physical pain. The impact of a father's love versus a mother's love, studies suggest that while children and adults often experience more or less the same level of acceptance or rejection from each parent, the influence of the father's rejection can be much greater than the other's. A thirteen nation team of psychologists working on the International Father Acceptance Rejection Project developed at least one explanation for this difference: children and young adults are likely to pay more attention to whichever parent they perceive to have higher interpersonal power or prestige. If a child perceives her father as having higher prestige, he may be more influential in her life than the child's mother. Fatherly love is critical to a person's development. The importance of a father's love  helps motivate many men to become more involved in nurturing child care. This should help shift the emphasis on mothering in America and how it has led to an inappropriate tendency to blame mothers for children's behavior problems and maladjustment.  In fact, fathers are often more implicated than mothers in the development of problems such as these. Thursday, July 26th, 2012

An infant can wiggle or slide through the opening between the stroller tray and seat bottom, but the baby's head and neck can become entrapped by the tray. Baby's who become entrapped at the neck are at risk of strangulation. In 2004, a 6 month old baby boy died of strangulation after his head was trapped between the seat and the tray of his Peg Perego stroller. In 2006,  a 7 month old girl nearly strangled when her head became trapped between the seat and the tray of her stroller in 2006. The recall is on two different older versions of the Peg Perego strollers, Venezia and Pliko-P3, manufactured between January 2004 and September 2007, in a variety of colors.  January 2008 voluntary industry standard which addressed the height of the opening between the stroller's tray and the seat bottom. The voluntary standard requires larger stroller openings that prevent infant entrapment and strangulation hazards. Only strollers that have a child tray with one cup holder are part of this recall. Strollers with a bumper bar in front of the child or a tray with two cup holders are not included in this recall. The following Venezia and Pliko-P3 stroller model numbers that begin with the following numbers are included in this recall. The model number is printed on a white label on the back of the Pliko P-3's stroller seat and on the Venezia stroller's footboard. Giving Makes Young Children Happy

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012
~Please visit Texas Health & Life for the Most Affordable Texas Heath Insurance & Texas Medicare Supplement~ It is nobler to give than to receive, it may also make you happier & even if you're a toddler, according to a new study by three psychologists at the University of British Columbia. The study finds that toddlers under the age of two are happier when giving treats to others than receiving treats themselves. Furthermore, the study shows children are happier when they give their own treats away than when they give an identical treat that doesn't belong to them. The findings support  research showing that adults feel good when they help others and may help explain why people act pro-socially, even when doing so involves personal cost. This is the first study to show that giving to others makes young children happy. These findings show that children are actually happier giving than receiving. Each toddler received some treats, such as Goldfish crackers. A few minutes later, the toddler was asked to give one of these treats away to a puppet. In addition, the experimenter provided an extra treat and asked the child to give this to the puppet. The children's reactions were videotaped and later rated for happiness on a seven-point scale. When toddlers shared their own treat with a puppet, they displayed greater happiness than when giving a treat provided by the researcher. This contrast underscores the role of personal sacrifice, and rather than finding it aversive, suggests that children find this behaviour emotionally rewarding. These findings shed light on a previously debated issue: Why do humans help others, including people they've just met? Part of the answer is that giving feels good. The fact that toddlers show the warm glow of giving suggests that the capacity to derive joy from helping others is deeply woven into human nature.  Looking for the best information and the best rates on Texas Health Insurance Quotes ~Texas Home & Auto Insurance Quotes visit www.texashealthandlife.com or give us a call at or 512-246-9955

Which prescription and over the counter drugs negatively effect the brain?

Tuesday, July 24th, 2012
~Please visit Texas Health & Life for the Most Affordable Texas Heath Insurance & Texas Medicare Supplement~ Drugs commonly taken for common medical conditions negatively affect your brain causing long term cognitive impairment. These drugs referred to as anticholinergics, block acetylcholine which is a nervous system neurotransmitter. The list of drugs include such common over-the-counter brands as Dramamine, Benadryl, Excedrin PM, Nytol, Sominex, Tylenol PM, and Unisom. Other anticholinergic drugs, such as Detrol, Paxil, Demerol and Elavil are available only by prescription. Researchers  conducted a 6 year observational  study that evaluated 1,652 Indianapolis area African-Americans over the age of 70 who had normal cognitive function.  Taking one anticholinergic significantly increased an individual’s risk of developing mild cognitive impairment and taking two of these drugs doubled this risk.
Many view over-the-counter drugs as safe because they don’t require a prescription.  In fact, many over-the-counter drugs were previously carefully monitored prescription drugs.  Motrin was the first non-salicylate prescription NSAID. Now it is a popular over-the-counter ibuprofen option. Similarly, anti-ulcer drugs like Zantec, Tagamet, and Prilosec used to be  controlled. Now they can all be easily purchased in a smaller over-the-counter strength that nearly doubles the number of pills required to equal the prescription dose.
Just because a drug is available without a prescription does not make it any less dangerous. It is still a chemical, which in no way, shape, or form treats the cause of the problem and can lead to complications that can seriously injure, if not kill, you or someone you love.

So this is clearly important information that can help you or someone you love reduce your risk of dementia as you get older. Based on the findings of this study, I would strongly recommend that seniors in particular avoid all anticholinergic drugs, like Benadryl (generic is diphenhydramine) which is a pervasive and commonly used in virtually all of the over-the-counter sleeping pills. Researchers will continue studying the matter to see whether anticholinergic-induced cognitive impairment can be reversed.

What are Anticholinergic Drugs?Anticholinergic drugs block a nervous system neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease typically have a marked shortage of acetylcholine. Anticholinergic drugs are available both over-the-counter and by prescription, as medications used for a variety of symptoms can have this effect. Examples include antihistamine, night-time pain relievers,  and other sleep aids, such as:Tylenol PM, Excedrin PM, Nytol, Sominex, Unisom, Benadryl, and Dramamine
Prescription drugs with anticholinergic effects include certain medications to control incontinence, antidepressants, and certain narcotic pain relievers. Examples of prescription meds in these categories include: Detrol, Paxil, Demerol, Elavil, and A Special Note for Aspartame ‘Reactors’
Many of the drugs listed as well as a long list of additional ones, contain diphenhydramine. You need to also beware that chewable tablets and rapidly disintegrating tablets that contain diphenhydramine may be sweetened with aspartame. Anticholinergic Drugs Increases Dementia in the Elderly Benadryl and Sominex have been found to cause hallucinations in the elderly, and a number of the drugs on the list also cause dental decay. The results  indicate that drugs with anticholinergic effects is another piece of the puzzle that might explain the sharp rise in dementia and cognitive decline. Dementia strikes about 50 %  of people who reach the age of 85. Of those, about 60%  go on to develop Alzheimer’s disease according to the University of Michigan. . 53% of the participants used a possible anticholinergic, and 11 % used a definitive anticholinergic drug. They found that those who took drugs classified as definite anticholinergics had a four times higher incidence of cognitive impairment. Even More Reasons to Ditch the Sleep Meds In 2008, Americans filled more than 56 million prescriptions for sleeping pills and spent more than $600 million on over-the-counter sleep aids. Anticholinergic sleep medications in particular may be causing far more harm than good, especially long term, without providing any benefit at all. CBC News reported that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has had data for 15 years which shows that over-the-counter sleep aids like Excedrin PM and Tylenol PM do not offer any significant benefit to patients.  There’s no explanation for why the FDA took 15 years to evaluate the industry’s research. Another analysis of sleeping pill studies from 2007  found that sleeping pills like Ambien, Lunesta, and Sonata reduced the average time to go to sleep by just under 13 minutes compared with placebo pills.   You’may suffer withdrawal symptoms that could be worse than your initial insomnia. Some, such as Ambien, may also become less effective when taken for longer than two weeks, which means you may find yourself needing ever higher dosages. Sleeping pills,  Ambien in particular, are also known to increase your risk of getting into a traffic accident. Ambien actually ranks among the top 10 drugs found in the bloodstreams of impaired drivers, according to some state toxicology labs. Among the elderly, using sleeping pills may increase the risk of nighttime falls and injuries, and anyone who takes them may find they wake up feeling drowsy if the effects of the drug have not worn off yet. You’re are better off finding safe and natural solutions that will actually address the underlying causes of your sleepless nights instead of just cover up the resulting symptoms. A Stanford University Medical School study found that after 16 weeks in a moderate-intensity exercise program, subjects were able to fall asleep about 15 minutes earlier and sleep about 45 minutes longer at night. However, don’t exercise too close to bedtime or it may keep you awake. Calming activities such as journaling, meditating, sipping herbal tea, washing your face, using the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) or reading a book may soothe your mind and help you unwind. Be sure your phone, email, and television are all off during this time. Make sure your sleeping environment is comfortable and conducive to sleep. This includes keeping the temperature cool, adding in some white noise if you need it and making sure your room is pitch-black. If there is even the tiniest bit of light in the room it can disrupt your circadian rhythm and your pineal gland’s production of melatonin and serotonin. For this reason, I highly recommend adding room-darkening drapes to your bedroom, or if this is not possible wearing an eye mask to block out any stray light. Our Brains Act The Same to Heartache and Physical Pain

Monday, July 23rd, 2012
~Please visit Texas Health & Life for the Most Affordable Texas Heath Insurance & Texas Medicare Supplement~ Like a jab in the side with a hot poker, social rejection hurts and now proven to be literally. A new study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science shows our brains make little distinction between the sting of being rejected by peers, by a lover, boss, or family member and the physical pain that arises from injury or disease.  University of Michigan, Columbia University, and the University of Colorado put fourty individuals who were brokenhearted by a recent breakup into a brain scanner and watched as each individual gaze upon a photo of his or her ex and pondered the hurt  felt at having been spurned. In separate scanning sessions, the subjects had the laboratory equivalent of a hot poker held to the forearm. The pain messured 8 on a 10-point pain scale. The functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanned the the individuals and showed their brains responding both to physical pain and emotional hurt with increased blood flow to a wide range of common regions. This is a clear sign of neural overlap in the way we process and experience social and physical pain. As subjects contemplated their emotional pain, included among the areas that showed heightened activity as subjects contemplated their emotional pain, were two brain areas  that neuroscientists had heretofore associated almost exclusively with physical pain. The Researcher couldn't get over how beautiful the results were.  In the two new brain regions where they discerned overlap during the physical and emotional pain conditions, the intensity of activation in those areas virtually mirrored each other.  The study is the latest in a still-new body of research.   A handful of studies has established an increasingly close relationship between our experience of physical pain and the painful emotions that come with feeling socially rejected. But several of those studies suggested that the neural overlap extended only to areas where humans process the emotional experience of pain that getting poked with a stick in the eye naturally makes us feel sad, mad, and emotionally distressed. The latest study shows there's more to the story than that: that getting dumped, disrespected or excluded feels literally like pain, but a kind of pain whose physical source is not so evident. Which Matters More :Respect or Money For Happiness In Life?

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012
~Please visit Texas Health & Life for the Most Affordable Texas Heath Insurance & Texas Medicare Supplement~ New research happiness in life is related to how much you are respected  by those around you and not the status that comes from how much money you have in your bank account. So if higher socioeconomic status doesn't equate with a greater sense of well-being, then what does? Colleagues of the Study  hypothesized that higher sociometric status – respect and admiration in your face-to-face groups, such as your friendship network, your neighborhood, your co-workers, or your athletic team   makes  a difference in your overall happiness. Over a series of four studies have been done to test this hypothesis. The first study surveyed 80 college students who participated in 12 different campus groups including sororities and ROTC. Each student's sociometric status was calculated through a combination of peer ratings, self-report, &  the number of leadership positions the student had held in his or her group. They also reported total household income and answered questions related to their social well-being. The Study also took in account for gender and ethnicity. The researchers found that sociometric status, but not socioeconomic status, predicted students' social well-being scores. Researchers were able to duplicate the findings in a second study that surveyed a larger and more diverse sample of participants.  They found that the relationship between sociometric status and well-being could be explained by the sense of power and social acceptance that the students said they felt in their personal relationships. The third study provided evidence that the relationship between sociometric status and well-being could actually be evoked and manipulated in an experimental setting. The fourth study researchers followed students in a MBA program, they found that changes in sociometric status from pre-graduation to post-graduation corresponded to changes in the MBA students' social well-being. Post-graduation sociometric status predicted social well-being stronger after post-graduation. If someone's standing in their local ladder went up or down, so did their happiness. Together, the four studies provide clear evidence for the relationship between sociometric status and well-being. Sociometric status seems to matter more socioeconomic status because  people adapt.  Money doesn't buy happiness is because people quickly adapt to the new level of income or wealth. Lottery winners are initially happy but then return to their original level of happiness quickly. Windshield Repair

Monday, July 9th, 2012

~Please visit Texas Health & Life for the Most Affordable Texas Insurance ~

 1. Put a little space between you and the vehicle in front of you Keeping enough distance between you and the vehicle in front of you will almost eliminate any possibility of getting rock chips on your paint or windshield.   It’s easy to maintain the correct distance by just finding an object next to the road ahead.  When the vehicle in front of you passes it you should be able to count, “One Mississippi, Two Mississippi,” before you should be able to pass that same object.  This “2 second margin” will not only prevent rock chips, it’ll keep you out of the body shop. 2. Don’t follow construction trucks and other large vehicles. Gravel trucks spew rocks that damage your vehicle.  Other trucks kick up dirt and debris.  Semis often have tire failure that send out shrapnel that can seriously damage your vehicle.  If you’re behind one of these vehicles either speed up and pass them, or slow down and put plenty of distance between the two of you. 3. Go slow on non-paved roads The gravel and debris your tires kick up will damage the paint on the underside of your vehicle.  Following someone on a gravel road is a sure way to damage your car.  Pot holes, deep ruts and dips can damage your car’s suspension, tires and body work.  If you are off pavement, slow down…  4. Stay way back if the vehicle in front of you is driving on the shoulder Very young drivers, very old drivers, trucks with trailers and drivers under the influence often run with one tire off of the main road surface.  Stay away from them.  The chances of them kicking up something that will damage your vehicle is great. 5. Fix the damage you have while it is still small If you get a rock chip in your windshield get it fixed right away. Rock chips tend to spread quickly with extreme changes in temperature. A small chip can can quickly run the length of your windshield in seconds when the temperature rises or drops. Rock chips on your paint can be touched up to improve appearance and to prevent further paint damage.  Regularly washing and drying your vehicle will allow you to monitor your vehicle’s condition and modify your driving habits if your vehicle is suffering damage.
