Heath officials have confirmed HIV infections in 5 youth under 18 in Travis County. According to medical director of the Austin/Travis County Health and Human Services Department Dr. Philip Huang, this unusually high number. For all of last year, the department confirmed 6 HIV/AIDS cases in that age group.
This may be due to some complacency about developing about HIV/AIDS causing young people to not take precautions when having sex.
The cases are confirmed to have been sexually transmitted, rather than acquired by sharing needles. HIV cases are on the rise among young people all over the united states. Complacency about the disease can be occurring because more people are managing the disease with medications with fewer dying from the disease.
Data from a survey of high school student behavior in Texas in 2011 that showed:
- 52 % have had sexual intercourse at least once.
- 54 % used a condom the last time they had sex.
- 17 % had four or more sex partners.
- 7 % had sex the first time before age 13.
