Beneficial Heath Savings Accounts

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

There are a number of people who think a Health Savings Account is the greatest thing since, well — since Hector was a pup; and that may be the case, for some people. That doesn’t mean it applies to everyone. Indeed, Health Savings Accounts may be beneficial for some people, but not for others; this makes perfect sense because everyone is unique and all have their own financial situations.

Health Savings Accounts may benefit individuals and families if they intend on putting money away and saving for the future. They have to have that mindset or nothing will be saved for future health care expenses due to inactivity with contributions.

If the account doesn’t grow, it won’t be beneficial, now or in the future. So, think twice before trying this out, and always ask a health care insurance agent if this kind of account would suit YOUR circumstances.

Health Savings Account – Should You Have One?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

This is actually a good question. Should you have a Health Savings Account? There is no right or wrong answer to this other than it’s purely a personal choice. It honestly depends on what would best suit your circumstances.

Health Savings Accounts supposedly help Americans save for “qualified” medical and retiree health expenses on a tax-free basis. This is a good plan for most people, but be cautioned by the term “qualified,” and be sure you find out more about qualifications prior to making any decisions.

If you aren’t a person who is inclined to save, then this isn’t likely going to work for you. Ask questions and find out if it suits your financial style.

Tips for Buying Texas Health Insurance

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Shopping for heath care insurance isn’t that easy. Helpful hints always come in handy.

It wouldn’t be so bad trying to find health care insurance if there weren’t so many options to choose from, but that is both good news and bad news at the same time. It is good news because having various options to choose from means getting an insurance policy that is almost made to order. The bad news is it may wind up being confusing for the shopper. This is where speaking to a licensed and knowledgeable insurance broker is helpful.

Many people want to save time and money when they shop for health care insurance premiums. In order to do that, some advance homework is needed before calling to find out what choices there are on the market. The first thing a shopper should know is the possible maximum out-of-pocket expenses they will be paying. This is also called the co-insurance maximum.

Before spending one cent, know the figures first; it only makes good sense. The dollar coverage means the max that a person may spend in one year – both ‘in network’ and ‘out of network’ medical costs. Usually insurance agents refer to this as getting the rough costs for the co-insurance limit and the deductible.

Always, always, always read the fine print on any insurance policy. There are lots of insurance brokers who are able to offer fairly good lifetime maximums for expenses over the life of a policy. Say you have a rough dollar amount of slightly over $3 million – a good average by the way- you still need to get out the policy and read the fine print or ask your agent.

The reason for reading the small print is that some insurance plans have a per incident/per year maximum, and those limits supersede the lifetime maximums. So knowing what the policy says before it’s purchased is being a smart shopper.

If a staying within a budget is necessary, have that already worked out before shopping for health insurance. Talk to as many agents as possible about the different plans available and the overall comparisons between them. Mention the budget right up front when talking to any insurance agent. This allows them to shop for carriers that have premiums in the quoted price range, saving time and money in the long run.

Many people detest talking on the phone, so the other option is shopping online at various websites. It should be remembered, however, what is on the website may not apply as shown. This is why speaking to a live agent saves time and hassles later; the wrong kind of insurance may be bought online, based on a guesstimate of what might work.

There will likely be enormous differences between carriers for various Medicare supplement plans as many insurance companies simply charge what the market will bear. Always remember to shop with a calculator to see which plans will suit your personal needs without breaking the bank.

Medicare Supplement Shopping Gets Easier

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Medicare supplement shopping isn’t quite as bad as it’s made out to be, nor is it as expensive as people think. Taking about a half hour of time to surf online and comparison shop will make all the difference in the world, not to mention save money.

This isn’t a state secret, but some people seem to think it is. If people took the time to search Medicare supplement prices online, they would find – by comparing prices online – that they are not as pricey as one would think. Now that might be a novel thought, saving money buying health care supplements, but it can be and is being done. Saving money on Medicare supplements, while not quite as easy as 1-2-3, is not quite the uphill battle that it has been painted to be.

Some people are paying really high prices for their supplements and that is baffling. They are paying those prices though because they opted to name brand shop for health care insurance benefits. Name brand shopping means going for the big insurance companies such as AARP, Blue Shield, etc. Opting for brand name health care insurance means paying brand name prices. It’s a bit like the difference between buying Nike brand running shoes and no name runners at the local Walmart store.

Spend time online shopping with smaller carriers. Often they are able to provide better and lower pricing because they don’t have the same kind of overhead as the big guys. While the supplements won’t differ in content from one small health care insurance company to another, the prices are variable.

Smaller health care insurance carriers also have a slightly different approach to customer service, as in it’s often more personable and one-on-one. The local agents know their stuff and they know their people. They also have insider information as to what goes on in their bailiwick. That is good information to know when shopping for health care insurance.

While switching health care insurance providers is often a yearly pilgrimage around the changing of the year, this may actually be done anytime throughout the year. There are exceptions to this rule, so make it a point to ask a knowledgeable health care insurance agent what the scoop is before changing insurance carriers mid-stream.

Maternity Leave May Be a Problem When Applying for Health Care Insurance

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

While one might think applying for maternity leave would be an easy thing to do – after all people do have babies quite often – this assumption would be incorrect.

Mat leave isn’t, contrary to popular opinion, that easy to get. This is where talking to a health care insurance broker will make the difference between being out-of-luck and having a plan that kicks in, and actually covers some portion of maternity leave.

It’s not that people cannot get maternity leave, but rather it is difficult to actually find it when you need it. Needless to say, there are a lot of hoops that have to be jumped through to qualify and there are also numerous restrictions. You need to find out what those restrictions are prior to needing this type of coverage, rather than getting to the point coverage is required and it isn’t enough or doesn’t offer what is really needed.

Getting mat leave is difficult, and there are several reasons for this. For instance, say a person is employed or has group health insurance benefits that actually happen to include maternity leave. This is what is called ideal coverage for when the baby arrives.

Individual insurance is a different story. Once this type of insurance coverage is located, it’s best to spend some time finding out what the maternity coverage really does cover – and – what it does not. This is where a good health care insurance broker really earns their money. Rely on their knowledge.

Solo maternity coverage is something most insurance companies tend to decline because it is very expensive and insurance companies are in the business to make money, not lose it. In a group medical health care situation this is different, and the rates and variables are also different than asking for solo maternity insurance. The bottom line is insurance company profit.

When in doubt about maternity leave coverage, spend some time shopping around to find out what the lay of the land is for the future. It will save everyone a great deal of grief in the long run knowing what is available and what isn’t.

Drug Prices Drag the Health Care System Down

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Truth be told, one of the major problems with the health care system in America today is the cost of drugs. They’re out of control.

The other really bad news is that all costs in the medical care system are going up and don’t show any signs of slowing down. It used to be that health care was at least affordable. However, due to the overuse and abuse of the system, costs started to creep up and up. Now what the nation is facing are situations like having a heart attack or cancer costing your house, and just about anything else you may have on hand that can be converted to pay the medical bills.

These high costs are also the reason why millions of Americans do not have health care insurance. This includes those who have a job and work. They just don’t have the extra money to buy insurance. It’s bad enough they can’t get health coverage for themselves, but many families are also without insurance for their children. That’s downright scary- and this is a sign of troubled times.

Troubled times usually means a shaky economy, and look no further than the front page of your local newspaper for that bad news. You see the foreclosures, the bankruptcies, the layoffs – and the list goes on. This is an economy in which we are all trying to survive.

Ridiculous drug costs are just the tip of the iceberg. Why do you think you are paying such high prices? There are a couple of reasons for that. The first one is the insistence of using brand name drugs when generics will do the same thing, at less than half the price of a brand name pill.

The second reason you are paying more for drugs is because that is how drug companies survive, by selling drugs and making a profit. Normally they are continually developing drugs for the marketplace, but lately there are fewer drugs in the development pipeline and that means you pay higher prices so the drug companies can stay in business. That money out of your pocket also goes to drug research in hope the companies will find another blockbuster drug and stay in business.

The bottom line is if you want to save some money on your health care expenses, then buy generic drugs.

The Changing Face of Health Care Coverage

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

The more things change, they more they remain the same. Does that sound a bit confusing?

Just when you thought you had the health care system all figured out and things were working pretty well for you, something abruptly changed and you had to start all over again. Well just think about that for a second. It’s not much of a surprise that this happens, is it? Look at the shape the US health care system is in and it will likely give you pause for serious thought.

Why is the US health care system in such a mess? It mostly has to due with the fact that it is run by a conglomerate of separate business entities – insurance companies – that don’t really speak to one another. While they may exchange words now and then, communication for the betterment of their clients – as in you – doesn’t seem to be a priority for them.

The recent election may have made some differences in the system, but they won’t be evident for many years to come. Right now mention the word health care at a cocktail party and be prepared for some very polarized opinions to surface. It’s hard to ignore the fact that what we have in terms of health care is really over used; abused, in fact, would be the word that most often comes to mind.

Americans abuse the health care system by using it as a band-aid for things likes colds and flu, when it was initially intended to be for life’s major medical events like heart attacks, broken legs and other serious trauma. Many emergency rooms are filled with patients who would best be taken care of in a doctor’s office. Sad but true, our health care system is way over-priced and in dire need of a major overhaul.

This directly affects all Americans because you are the ones who ultimately pay the freight to keep the health care system running. So when prices start creeping up without any caps in sight, what you pay out of your pocket also goes up. These rising costs mean many people are not able to use the health care system.

Where does reform begin? It starts with cleaning up the economy. This will take some doing and it won’t happen overnight either. Perhaps with the advent of a new administration in Washington things may slowly begin to change.

Medicare Supplements Are All the Same

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

A lot of people don’t realize that Medicare supplements are the same from health insurance company to health insurance company. What’s different is how much you pay.

It’s nice to know that Medicare supplements are predictable. Boring, but predictable, is usually a good thing if you happen to move around a lot. Being the same everywhere is great news when you want to pick-up extra coverage, but are not able to turn to private health care insurance carriers.

Being the same means being standardized by offering the same thing. Well, at least it takes any guesswork out of the equation. Each health care insurance company that offers Medicare plans in your area has the same networks. It doesn’t matter what insurance company you deal with when you go to buy Medicare plans. Well wait, there is one significant difference and that difference will make your bankbook sing hallelujah.

These plans are not the same when it comes to the pricing. The reason for this is that each insurance company, being a separate business and privately owned, sets their own prices. So you may find a startling difference between one company and another just by calling around and doing some work with your calculator.

The pricing differences for Medicare supplements isn’t a national secret, or even one that the insurance companies try to hide. They’re just doing business. The problem is that a lot of people really don’t like talking to insurance agents, so they don’t bother to call around. The point is though, if you took the time to call even just three agents and asked about prices, you would definitely save money.

So the bottom line is if you want a deal on health care coverage, be smart and talk to an agent who has a large pool of companies to work with. The more companies the agent deals with, the better the price of your premium. It’s just the law of averages, and ultimately your good fortune to find a price that suits your budget.

Cheap Health Care Is Possible

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Yes, you can get cheaper health care if you know what to look for and where to find it. The secret is doing comparison shopping.

Everyone loves a bargain; and why wouldn’t they love to get something at a better price than they thought they might have to shell out in the first place? This is why it actually does pay to shop around for cheaper health care premiums.

This doesn’t mean to dive into the first less-expensive option you find. It means taking the time to compare what you find on one site with what you find on another one. Sure it might sound like a lot of work to do that, but if it saves you money and gets you what you want for health care, then it’s well-worth it.

Once you find something you think would work, pick up the phone and call the health insurance agent on duty and start asking some pointed questions about the plan(s) in which you are interested. Talking to an agent is the best way to find out the rules and the exceptions to the rules – which are often more important than what is covered.

By the way, just because you find something on a health care insurance website that has a great price, don’t take it as being the absolute truth as you read it. The sites are designed to provide general information only, so your case will be different. Each case IS different and this is why expecting to get what you see on a website won’t work. What you see there is a “for instance” example of what a person may pay if they happen to be XX age, in XX health, without XX illnesses.

Confused? This is one of the reasons people prefer talking to an agent and getting instant feedback. Reading information on a website, while good for generalities, doesn’t do much for the specifics of your particular situation. This is particularly true if you start discussing pre-existing conditions. Those make a significant difference to your health insurance premium rates.

While shopping for health care insurance is not the most fun thing in the world, it can be a lot easier and less expensive if you go about it the right way. Take the time to explore all your options before you make a final decision.

In or Out: What the Deal Is with Texas Health Insurance?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

You might not always live in the same place. That’s almost a given in today’s busy world with job opportunities all over the States, transfers, family situations, and retirement choices. What about your Medicare needs? Opting in and out of Medicare supplements seems like a major hassle, but it doesn’t have to be if you talk to a knowledgeable insurance agent.

It’s enough for you to have to get your act together to manage a move from one state to another. The list of things to do are endless and often the last thing that gets dealt with is what to do with your health care insurance. What you have in one state might not fit what you need in your new home. The timing for premium payments may change, etc., and the list goes on.

Health care insurance has at times been compared to a can of worms. Open the lid and you know for sure things will be all over the place. This is easy enough to sort out by talking to a health care insurance agent that knows their stuff. The difficult part is usually trying to figure out the opt in and opt out provisions. Those are complex.

Right now (and this may change depending on what state you are in, so check this out) you are able to opt in to Medicare supplements between November 15th of the prior year and December 31st. At that time you’ll be locked in until the next opt out period. This isn’t quite as simple as it sounds, so make sure you ask about this. It’s not simple because there are a lot of exceptions to the rules.

Although exceptions are a good thing, because they will then suit your changing needs, it is hard to always know for sure what you have and what you don’t when it comes to health care insurance. Take the time to ask, since opt in times may vary.

Here is another exception; this is if you happen to already be in a plan. If you are already in a plan, you are able to opt in to Medicare supplements between January and March rather than the 15th of November to December 31st. Another example, or exception, is if you are leaving one group health care plan or moving to a different service area. Yes, opt in and out times will vary.

While you may find this confusing, this is precisely the kind of information the health care insurance agents know inside out. So, when you call about opt in or opt out, rely on their expertise and save yourself a major headache.
